Search Angels began by helping adoptees reconnect with their biological parents. Over time, we expanded to serve late-discovery adoptees, donor-conceived individuals, and those who have always known one parent but never knew the other. Each of these groups faces unique challenges, but all share the same need: answers about identity and family.

Search Angels are volunteers who dedicate their time and skills to help people locate biological relatives. They use AncestryDNA test results, non-identifying records from adoption agencies, registry entries, and traditional genealogical research. DNA is the foundation of nearly all successful searches - an AncestryDNA test is required before we can begin.

While our Basic Search service is free, demand is high. Cases are assigned as volunteers become available - most clients are assigned within a few weeks, though cases involving foreign ancestry or only distant cousin DNA match results may take longer. For those who need faster support, we offer priority service levels - Paced, Dedicated, Exclusive, Deep Dive, and Unlimited Immersive - which move your case to the front of the queue. Regardless of the level chosen, every search depends on collaboration and trust.

Important Information Before You Submit

You must be at least 18 years old to request assistance. Search Angels do not search for minor children.

If you are a birth mother, father, or sibling of an adoptee, please note that our team does not take on active searches for you. Instead, we encourage you to enter your information into our Reunion Registry, which will notify you if a match is made.

Search Angels are unpaid volunteers. They never charge for their services, but may request reimbursement for expenses directly related to your search.

Timelines & Prioritization

On average, a Search Angel works on several cases at once. With so many requests, free Basic searches can take weeks to months to be assigned. Paid service levels receive priority placement, often within one week. This model allows us to continue offering hundreds of free searches each year while covering nonprofit overhead costs and reimbursing high-contributing volunteers for genealogical expenses.

Our Commitment

Each year, we complete between 700 and 1,000 searches. Roughly 90% of these are free thanks to the 10% who choose paid options and help sustain the program for everyone. Whether you select a free or paid service, your case will be approached with professionalism, care, and respect.

By submitting this form, you are indicating your intent to work with SearchAngels.org or one of our trusted volunteer partners. Please complete all fields as fully as possible; even the smallest detail can be the key to a successful outcome.
